Nepal captain Lamichhane was found guilty of raping a minor 


After more than a year, Nepal's star cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane was finally found guilty. On Friday, December 29, the leg spinner was found guilty by the Nepal District Court. Sandeep is accused of raping a 17-year-old girl. On this day, Nepal District Court Judge Shishir Raj Dhakal found Sandeep guilty after listening to the questions and answers of the lawyers of both sides. As a result, Sandeep's cricket career came into question.


Sandeep Lamichhane emerged as one of the reasons behind Nepal's astonishing rise on the Asian cricket map. The 23-year-old leg spinner took 112 wickets in just 51 ODIs. He also had 98 wickets in 52 matches in the international T20 arena.


He became the face of Nepal cricket to the whole world. Nepali cricket lovers were weaving a web of dreams about Sandeep Lamichhane. But in the end that dream is not coming true for them. Yesterday, the court of Nepal found him guilty of the crime of rape. Lamichhane's cricket career now stands on the verge of destruction.

Sandeep has been out on bail since January


The case against Sandeep Lamichhane was going on for almost two years. The complaint was that a 17-year-old girl was raped by a Nepalese cricketer. Sandeep Lamichhane ran away with dust in the eyes of the police for about a month after the complaint was filed. Later, however, he chose the path of surrender. Police arrested Sandeep on October 6, 2022. He was remanded in jail for 7 days after the preliminary hearing, which was later extended by another 5 days. Later it was extended indefinitely. However, on January 12, 2023, the Patan High Court granted him conditional bail. Sandeep also participated in the Asia Cup (Asia Cup 2023) competition. But he was found guilty once again in Kathmandu District Court yesterday.

According to the Nepal Police, on August 22 last year, before the Nepal cricket team's visit to Kenya, Sandeep asked a girl to go for a tour in Bhaktapur. The girl agreed. At night, when the girl wanted to go back to her hostel in Madhya Baneshwar, Sandeep Lamichhane stopped her. As the hostel closed by eight o'clock, the girl was forced to spend the night with Lamichhane at the hotel. First Sandeep wants to live in a separate room. Sandeep didn't let that happen either. Instead, this cricketer called the girl to his house and raped her twice. Although Sandeep denied all the allegations from the beginning. But the last defense did not happen. 


Sandeep Lamichhane was cut from the Nepal cricket team as soon as this allegation came forward. Sandeep Lamichhane was in the West Indies(WI) when the minor reported this complaint to the police. Sandeep was busy playing in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). The organizers cut him from the league there too. At first, the star cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane did not want to face the police. Instead, he started making various posts on social media to prove himself innocent.


As there was no solution, Sandeep finally reached Kathmandu via Qatar Airways. He himself was caught by the police. Even though he was in jail, Sandeep still claimed his innocence. Sandeep said, "I am sure I will get justice very quickly. I want to prove all the allegations false and return to the cricket ground again. I want to honor the fans wearing the jersey of my beloved country (Nepal). I am willing to cooperate in any way with the investigating agencies (Police) to prove my innocence. I am ready for a legal battle." After more than a year of legal tug-of-war, the verdict finally went against Sandeep Lamichhane.

Sandeep Lamichhane international career


In 2018, Sandeep Lamichhane made his debut in international cricket in the T20 format at the age of just eighteen (18) years. He played in ICC World XI jersey against West Indies. Then in 2018, he played the first (1st) one-day match against the United Arab Emirates. He has played more than hundred (100) international matches in total in the last five years. Took more than 200 wickets. Sandeep Lamichhane also set the record of hundred (100) wickets as the fastest bowler in ODI cricket. Left behind Rashid Khan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Mitchell Starc.

A long jail term awaits for Sandeep


But the promising youngster's cricket career has come to a halt due to his conviction in a rape case. According to a report published in Kathmandu Times, a single bench of His Excellency Justice Shishir Raj Dhakal in the Kathmandu District Court of Nepal found Sandeep Lamichhane guilty yesterday No sentence has been announced yet. It may be announced at the next hearing. Experts believe that Sandeep Lamichhane may be jailed for at least 3 to 10 years.
